Faux Cherry Blossom Panel

Share |

I don't know how this cherry, or as the Japanese call it sakura, blossom panel was made. I just know I Love, Love, Love It! The blossoms could be made of either paper or fabric, and could be die or hand cut. I don't know for sure. What I do know is with some paper or fabric, a pair or scissors and a whole pile of patience you could make something very similar to use as a decorative element in your wedding, for a party or even in your home.

Karen Hsu from Grandiflora was recently on vacation in Belgium when she came upon this window dressing in front of the showroom of world renowned florist Daniel Ost. She snapped a few images to share with me, and I'd like to share them with you.

The close up below shows what appears to be unopened pink and white flower buds are most likely small gobs of some type of wax or plastic wrapped around the bare tree branches.

However it was constructed the only word I can think of to describe the delicacy and beauty of it is "lovely."

It's nothing short of amazing how from such simple materials one can create such an amazing masterpiece. And make no mistake, Daniel Ost is a master floral designer who will take your breath away and leave you in awe at both his imagination and the technical skills he uses to create the stunning displays that have made him an international star.

If you're planning a wedding I hope these images will inspire you to use your imagination, take some time and either on your own or with the help of your florist or wedding coordinator, create a gorgeous panel to use as a backdrop for your ceremony or cake. I think the possibilities are endless.

Are there any instructions associated with this design idea? I am trying to recreate this and needed some help with how to construct the panel. Are there top and bottom supports to hang the panel or is it stuck to the wall behind the cake? I am also interested in what type of material the backdrop is made out of. Is it cheesecloth or Quilters Fusible Batting? I would appreciate any insight you could offer. Thanks so much.

Hi Devin,

No, unfortunately there are no design instructions. These were some photos submitted to me just to share the idea in general. If I were to try to re-create this idea I would try to use interfacing of some type. For the top and bottom I'd fold over at each end and sew a tube to place a wooden dowel through. On the top I'd then drill holes on each end and hang with a piece of chord/ribbon of some type.

Just thought I'd share a website with some interesting information on "mochibana", the decorating of branches with pink and white mochi "blossoms".
BTW, I stumbled upon your lovely website while looking for origami ideas. I love it! Thanks so much for sharing!
